Fashion jewellery care setup with cleaning cloth and brush for the ZEVQILO jewellery care guide

Fashion jewellery can keep its appearance longer when it is handled consistently and stored carefully. The biggest everyday risks are usually moisture, chemicals, friction and rough storage rather than normal short-term wear.

This guide covers practical care for common materials and finishes found in fashion jewellery, including brass, gold-tone or plated surfaces and stainless-steel pieces. Always follow product-specific instructions first because construction and finishes can vary.

1. Keep jewellery away from unnecessary moisture

Remove fashion jewellery before bathing, swimming or activities that expose it to prolonged water or sweat unless the product has been specifically verified for those conditions. Water can affect plated finishes, trapped moisture can sit around decorative stones or joints, and repeated exposure can change how a piece looks over time.

2. Apply perfume and skincare before jewellery

Perfume, deodorant, hairspray, lotions, sanitiser and cosmetics can contain alcohols, oils or other ingredients that leave residue on jewellery surfaces. A simple routine is to finish skincare, makeup and fragrance first, allow them to settle, then put on the jewellery.

3. Wipe after wearing

Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to remove surface oils and light residue. Avoid aggressive rubbing, especially on plated pieces or around decorative stones. Do not use abrasive polishing products unless the care instructions for that specific item say they are suitable.

4. Store pieces separately

Chains can tangle, hard edges can scratch softer finishes and decorative stones can rub against adjacent pieces. Store bracelets, pendant sets and Mangalsutra individually in soft pouches, compartments or a lined jewellery box. Close clasps before storage so chains are less likely to knot.

5. Brass jewellery

Brass is widely used in fashion jewellery because it can form detailed motifs and structured shapes. If the brass is plated or finished in a gold tone, treat the surface gently. Do not assume a brass piece should be polished with a strong metal cleaner; that can be unsuitable for plated or decorated surfaces.

6. Gold-tone and micro gold-plated finishes

Plated finishes are surface treatments, so friction and chemicals matter. Keep them away from rough cloths, abrasive cleaners and repeated rubbing against hard surfaces. The phrase “gold plated” describes a finish; it is different from solid gold. Product pages should identify the base material and finish separately when known.

7. Stainless-steel fashion jewellery

Stainless steel is used in some bracelets and contemporary jewellery because it can hold a clean structured shape. Even so, decorative coatings, black accents, stones and joints may require more care than the base steel itself. Follow the full product construction rather than assuming every stainless-steel piece should be treated the same way.

8. Decorative stones and settings

Avoid soaking jewellery with decorative stones unless the product specifically permits it. Moisture can remain around settings, and strong cleaning methods can affect adhesives or surface treatments in fashion jewellery. Handle stone-accented pendants and bracelets carefully when putting them on or taking them off.

9. Travel storage

For travel, separate chains and earrings into small pouches or compartments. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of delicate jewellery. For a pendant set, store the earrings so they cannot scratch the pendant face.

When should you stop wearing a piece?

If a clasp, hinge, chain or stone setting becomes loose, stop using the jewellery until you can inspect it properly. Continuing to wear a damaged piece can turn a small issue into a broken chain or lost component.
